Rent an entire tropical island in Queensland

Rent this entire tropical island in Queensland for less than $2,500

The concept of being able to hire a tropical island in Queensland is just for ultra-wealthy celebrities… right?

On the surface the idea is far too Hollywood for the everyday person, but we’re here to let you know it’s very much doable – even for us Average Joes.

Here’s how you can rent an entire tropical island in Queensland for you (and your party, because you’re going to want to share this with a lot of friends).

One of nature’s greatest masterpieces, the isle in question is named Pumpkin Island, because it’s a real treat to explore.

Situated off the coast of Yeppoon in the Southern Great Barrier Reef, this privately-owned slice of paradise offers eco-conscious self-contained accommodation that can be rented individually or in its entirety. Powered only by the wind and sun, its seven residences can accommodate up to 34 guests – perfect for small wedding parties, fancy family reunions or a well-deserved break for groups of friends.

To do some quick sums, the island can accommodate yourself and 9 friends (10 guests) for $2,220 per night (or $222 per person, per night). Not bad for the opportunity to experience total and uninterrupted solitude.

The island sits on six hectares, and is regarded as the first and only carbon positive inhabited island in Australia.

Its eco-friendliness knows no bounds; its caretakers are constantly striving for new ways to reduce their footprint (they offset 150% of their emissions during the 2017 calendar year); have been recognised as Australia’s most sustainable hotel (2018); are eco-certified; and are a climate action leader. Their core purpose is “to promote an enriching and enlightening experience of living, working and playing harmoniously with nature” which the island more than lives up to.

There’s so much to do on the island – wildlife watching for dolphins, turtles and whales; fishing; and snorkelling the coral reefs. For a truly unique fish and coral spotting experience, speak to the island owners and caretakers Wayne and Laureth and ask to borrow their glass kayak. It’ll be a day you won’t forget.

Island life means you can truly run rampant here. Forage for wild oysters in the rocks and have a go at shucking your catch; swing back and forth in a hammock under the dancing breeze and lounge around wherever you decide to drink in the view for the day. Snagging a prime spot is not an issue when you have the entire island to yourself.

Feeling peckish? Pumpkin Island is self-catering, so you can BYO all your food to prepare, hire a private chef to cater all your meals or pre-order gourmet meals online from the award-winning Waterline Restaurant at Keppel Bay Marina to collect on the day of your departure. Naturally, the local fare is on show in their packages. From seafood platters to fruit plates and mouth-watering meats to throw on the family-sized BBQ, you won’t go hungry on this trip.

For an even more secluded experience, hop over to Elysian Retreat, Pumpkin’s sister island. Elysian is a blissful escape on three hectares of private cove surrounded by rainforest and the magnificent Great Barrier Reef.

A boutique retreat, it has a small team of dedicated staff including a private chef to cater for a maximum of 20 guests. A getaway on Elysian will give you time to disconnect from the busyness of life and reconnect with the natural environment.
