7 reasons to get excited about the all-new Hayman Island

The countdown is on for the much-anticipated re-opening of Hayman Island by InterContinental in The Whitsundays.

Booking are open and teams have been working around the clock to complete the finishing touches on a multi-million dollar refurbishment before the opening on 1 July 2019.

The island has been closed since Cyclone Debbie swept through the region in 2017 but now, following a spate of re-openings and grand reveals – from Daydream Island‘s recent $100 million unveil and the opening of Elysium Retreat on Long Island to a mile-long list of mainland updates – it’s time for The Whitsundays‘ most luxurious private island to step back into the limelight.

Located on a 400-hectare private island – the northernmost island in the Whitsundays group – the 166-room resort was previously managed by One&Only but will now debut as an InterContinental property.

Along with the return of Australia’s most impressive resort pool (oh, just seven times the size of an Olympic swimming pool) here are 7 reasons to get excited about the all-new Hayman Island.

1. Sea scooter underwater tours

The team from Ocean Dynamics are leading an all-new line-up of Great Barrier Reef water experiences from Hayman Island, like Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet tours, guided jet-ski adventures, diving experiences, snorkelling lessons and private luxury boat charters.

But we’re most excited about their sea scooter tours.

With two hands gripped onto these underwater scooters, you control the level of propulsion to zoom through the water to a depth of 2.5 metres and over colourful coral and marine life, making snorkelling seem so 1998.

2. Private sunset beach picnics

The best way to cap off a day on Hayman Island? Take a transfer by speedboat to a private beach to watch the sun set across the Whitsunday Islands.

Executive Chef Erwin Joven will pack you a gourmet picnic to enjoy while drinking in your own private light show.

3. The new Hayman Spa

The jury is still out on whether the iconic ocean massage will return to the spa menu at Hayman Island but what we do know is there will be a line-up of mindful treatments using local botanical herbs. You’ll also discover a calendar of wellness experiences including clean-eating meal plans, sunrise yoga sessions and meditation classes.

With 13 treatment rooms, the spa will sit side-by-side with a state-of-the-art fitness centre offering personal training and group classes.

4. The Grove

Hayman Island The Grove

This brand-new Hamptons-esque boutique and cafe is your one-stop shop for everything from your morning coffee and afternoon ice-cream through to souvenirs and designer handbags.

Grab a bottle of bubbles from the dedicated wine cellar, pick up a postcard to instil some snail-mail style FOMO in family and friends back home, or treat yourself to a new kaftan to wear by the pool.

5. The ocean-front bar

Pacific restaurant and bar at Hayman Island

With a resort of this calibre, you’d expect the culinary line-up to be impressive and guests are being teased with news of five new innovative dining experiences.

It all starts with AQUA – Hayman’s poolside bar. Consider this your go-to throughout the day for seafood share dishes, seasonal salad bowls, zesty ice pops, fresh juices and cocktails.

Pacific is the resort’s signature, brasserie-style bar and restaurant. This is where you’ll go for gourmet buffet breakfast in the morning and return for sophisticated a la carte dining in the evening. But we’re calling it for cocktail hour, too, with a new ocean-front bar putting you front and centre for some of the best views in The Whitsundays.

Mix things up during your stay with wood-fired pizzas and Italian vino at Amici Trattoria and pan-Asian eats at Bam Bam, saving the 1950s-inspired Bar Fifty in the hotel lobby for your after-dinner tipple.

6. The VIP beach house

Hayman Island three-bedroom beach house

While three accommodation wings already offer a choice of rainforest views, direct pool access or sweeping ocean views, a brand new three-bedroom beach house is the cherry on top of this island pie.

Each of the three bedrooms has its own en suite and private pool while the house has another beachfront infinity pool, making it perfect for family and group stays.

In addition, a new collection of luxury private residences in the hilltops will be available to rent for those who want to experience a more private piece of paradise on Hayman Island, while still enjoying hotel services.

7. Two words: Kids Club

Kids are welcomed with open arms at Hayman Island with a Kids Club program designed to give parents a well-deserved break.

But don’t expect a closed-in room with video games. The onus here is on island experiences that range from barramundi feeding in Lagoon Lanai, to sand flat tours, bird walks, meditation classes and more.

And, lastly, let’s not forget that pool
