16 Instagrammable desserts you must try in Queensland
We all knew it. Now it’s official. We no longer just look for the best things to see and do when planning a holiday, but what to feast on.
The majority of young travellers (76%) around the world say foodie experiences on holidays are the most memorable, according to Hotels.com’s recent Tasty Travel report. And because there’s ALWAYS room for dessert, one in four Aussie millennials love sharing their thumb-stopping pictures of indulgent desserts like monster milkshakes and Nutella-laden doughnuts on social media.
So, if you love peppering your Instagram feed with equal amounts of palm trees, pool-side cocktails and OTT treats when on holidays, this one’s for you. And let’s be honest, after shredding for said holiday for weeks, who wouldn’t want to indulge a little?
To find your perfect next Insta moment, feast your way through this list of Queensland‘s most Instagrammable desserts.
Twix Tacos | Ze Pickle
If you’re anything like me, you love a deep-fried chocolate bar from the good old fish ‘n’ chip shop down the road every now and then. Nek minute, the guys at Ze Pickle wrap a Twix into a red velvet pancake taco filled with ice-cream, brownie salsa and shaved milky bar. Mind. Blown.
DIY Puffles | Hello Mister Frankie
Late-night craving? Hello Mister Frankie’s got your back for little more than 10 bucks. These guys rose to Insta-fame when pics of their towering puffles (that’s soft-serve wrapped in a light and airy egg waffle cone and stacked with colourful sweet treats) flooded our feeds. The best part? You can create your own.
Choose your puffle base, one of the original soft-serve flavours (try vanilla and fig or taro & sriracha) and go nuts on the toppings to create the perfect combo – all in the name of the gram, of course.
OTT Cakes | Tome
This is a dessert queen’s Cinderella moment. Stopping the thumbs of Insta fans around Queensland, the shelves at this Maroochydore café are stacked full of snap-worthy treats – from caramel-filled dark chocolate brownies topped with glazed pecans, to lemon meringue pies and OTT tiered cakes made to order. This stuff will make your ‘red heart’ count go through the roof.
And the coffee (a blend from Bear Bones Espresso) is excellent, too, pleasing those who didn’t just come for the sinful treats (seriously, who are you?!?).
All-in-one | Eat Street
The Kombi Alley at Brisbane‘s popular Eat Street is where Instagram-dessert-dreams come true. But the jury is out on exactly which one is the most Instagrammable dessert. It’s a tie between 64 layers of perfectly puffy pastry shaped into a cronut cone and filled with frozen Nutella and banana custard by Chocolate Komberry Co. and the Kit Kat doughnut fries from The Doughnut Bar next door.
Picture a rich swirl of double chocolate soft-serve nestled on a bed of hot doughnut fries and drizzled with milk and white chocolate sauce, crunchy Maltesers, vanilla wafers and stabbed with Kit Kat sticks. But who said you have to choose? Order both – you deserve it!
Rainbow Coffees | Piggy Back Café
Okay, if sinful pastry is not your thang, let the team at Piggy Back Café lure you in with their Insta-famous rainbow coffees, before converting you to a devotee of desserts with their Golden Gaytime Hotcakes (that’s chocolate hotcakes topped with honeycomb-crumbed vanilla bean ice-cream and chocolate brownie bits). Enough said!

Pastry Heaven | Bam Bam Bakehouse
As a regular foodie you’d be familiar with Bam Bam’s perfectly-crafted eclairs, cronuts and custard cream puffs splattered all over your Inta feed by now. But there’s more. Bam Bam Bakehouse is constantly pumping out new pastry creations – like the extra fluffy and flowery Barbie croissant smothered in a pink glaze, and the Ink Gin and tonix choux bombs in time for World Gin Day. They’re so good even Gold Coast golden girl Margot Robbie couldn’t resist and decided to ditch the idea of shredding for her wedding to kick off her hen’s weekend here.
Epic Shakes | Petals and Pinecones
There’s no such thing as too much of a good thing. That’s what the guys at Petals and Pinecones (P&Ps as the local’s call it) must have thought when concocting their epic shake creations. Because they are next level and possibly Queensland‘s biggest!
Get your fingers sticky on a Mermaid Shake or – my favourite – Movie Time Creation Jar. Think caramel Tim Tam frappe loaded with salty pretzels, caramel popcorn, slices of Tim Tam, chocolate sauce and rainbow sprinkles. How’s your blood sugar levels going?
The Dessert Board | The Dock at East Shores
Sometimes you just need it all. This is the jackpot of all desserts, found in the unlikeliest of places – Gladstone. The dessert board at The Dock at East Shores is loaded with cinnamon-dusted doughnuts, a triple-choc brownie drizzled with hot chocolate sauce, the creamiest of crème brûlées and four scoops of Delizia gelato of your choice. And if this wasn’t enough, there are two syringes filled to the brim with chocolate and salted caramel goodness. *Drool*
Gelato | Alowishus Delicious
You know it; that FOMO moment when your friend posts a cute pic of an about-to-melt strawberry and mango ice-cream cone on a hot summer’s day. Instantly your childhood memories flash back and before you know it, you’re in the car, ready to track down the best gelato shop, stat. At Alowishus Delicious, you’ll have the tough choice of 34 flavours – from childhood classics like Bubblegum to modern influences like Dulce de Leche and a regional favourite, Bundaberg Rum & Raisin. When in Rome…
Waffles | Decisions
At Decisions, it’s up to you to decide whether you’re going for a #superfood or #superjunk option on the menu (and your waiter won’t tell, promise!). But let’s be honest, us dessert devotees don’t discriminate against kilojoules. So go ahead and order the waffles stacked with banana slices, cubes of creamy salted caramel fudge, topped with a dollop of Ferrero Roche mousse and finished off with a drizzle of maple syrup.

Raw Cheesecakes | Blendlove
They say looks will only get you so far and at Blendlove, they’ll get you pretty darn far. But it’s what’s on the inside that counts just as much. Every single one of their raw-esome cheesecakes is vegan, gluten free, dairy free, and refined sugar-free, making them the perfect guilt-free treats for your feed. You’re welcome.
Rainbow-Coloured Flat Lays| Cowch
Claiming its stake as Queensland‘s first dessert cocktail bar, Cowch has been filling our stomachs with snap-worthy treats for a while now. Invite your friends and load your table with churros, ice-cream-filled brioche buns, Nutella waffles, decorate-yourself popsicles and dessert pizzas. Add a few margaritas topped with puffy, pink fairy floss and your next perfect flat lay is complete.
Funnel Cakes | NightQuarter
At World Famous Funnel Cakes you might have purchased a dessert but what you’ll get is an entire cabaret show. Housed in a shipping container turned vintage cabaret parlour at NightQuarter, the boys and girls behind the counter pop and boogie to lounge music while creating and decorating sinful funnel cakes. This North American specialty is crispy like a churro, soft like a doughnut, has the sweetness of a waffle and is served with ice-cream and your choice of toppings.

Hot Chocolate Milo Martini | MOTO
We Queenslanders are often made fun of by our southern cousins when the winter temps drop to 20 and we’re not just a bit chilly, but a shivering mess. The struggle is real. So real, that the guys at MOTO found a new way to warm up our winter nights. Meet the Hot Chocolate Milo Martini – a warming mix of spiced rum, vodka, Baileys, Milo, dark chocolate, a hint of vanilla, and topped with a toasted marshmallow. To finish it off (and create the perfect moment to snap away), the bartender will sprinkle a thin layer of Milo on top. Bingo!
Dessert Brekkie | The Nines
It’s these guys’ loaded milkshakes that bring all the Insta fans to the yard. Hidden in a not-so-brag-worthy location (the old Maroochydore Homemaker Centre), the loaded shakes topped with bits of waffles, ice-cream cones, lollies – and the dessert brekkie creations (like the banana bread french toast with cinnamon cream cheese filling) – will have you snapping away for days. So, #getloaded.
Rainbow Cake | Fat Frog Beach Café
Six layers of perfectly spongy cake in a kaleidoscope of colours, carefully separated by smooth spreads of sweet, sweet icing and decorated with colourful pops of jelly beans is just another reason why you need a Whitsundays holiday NOW. Just think about the many picture-perfect moments to fill your gram!
