6 things you didn’t know about Noosa Festival of Surfing

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Every March you can see more types of surfing in Noosa than you ever thought possible. Dogs hanging ten, pro longboarders and tandem surfers can be seen hitting the water for the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing – the biggest surfing event in the world by competitor numbers.

More than 800 entrants from 15 countries converge on the waves at First Point, cheered by crowds watching from the festival village right in front of the break.

Longboards, finless, bodysurfing and tandem – each style of surfing is showcased over eight days, with plenty of action in and out of the water. Here are six things you didn’t know about the most inclusive surfing festival in the world.

1. It’s got every surfing style under the sun

When you plonk your feet into the sand at the First Point, you know you’re in for a good show. Not only can you witness the pro’s carving it up, at Noosa Festival of Surfing you can catch some of the most innovative and kooky surfing out there.

With 11 speciality events – from the gravity-defying norerider division to boardless surfing and the Surfing Dog Spectacular – you won’t get enough of the show playing out in Noosa’s perfect waves. There is even a costume party amongst them!

2. Everyone and anyone can get involved

Whether you’re a junior, senior, or in-between, you can compete in the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing. With an under 15’s section and an over 70’s section, age is no excuse for not getting up on a board and trying your best.

3. You don’t have to know anything about surfing

If you’re less gracious than a fish out of water when it comes to all things surfing, sitting on the sidelines (or sand, more like) is just as fun. For the week, Noosa is transformed into surfie central (well, more than usual), so if you’ve always wanted to live like Kate Bosworth from Blue Crush for a week, here’s your chance.

Let the sun bleach your hair and the sand get everywhere as you live like a local, bouncing between the beach and the festival village straight off the sand.

Wake up and #treatyoself to Wellness Wednesday – kicking off with a 90-minute yoga session in the Nine Sunshine Coast Pavilion. You can strike your favourite yoga pose alongside the competitors while the surf waves produce the perfect background music. Want more? Get involved with a Pilates or training session on the sand.

If relaxing on the beach is more your thing, catch a few screenings of surfing documentaries made in conjunction with the Life is Better When You Surf Film Festival. Along with two days of filmmaker tips mid-competition, the festival also includes filmmaking workshops, talks on new technologies, and short film competitions.

If you’re a budding photographer and you can’t get enough of those blue hues, take the chance to pick the brains of award-winning wave cinematographers over lunch. Find out what it takes to nab those perfect shots and view unseen footage from the best waves ever ridden.

It wouldn’t be a true visit to the beach without sandcastles, so get the kids involved with an afternoon of Sandcastle-building workshops, competitions, and interactive performances at the Nine Sunshine Coast Pavilion.

4. It’s the world’s best surf party

Unsure of what to do once the competition finishes for the day? The surfers know just the place to be – the XXXX Summer Beach Bar. Think laidback vibes, the sea breeze, ice cold beer and wine, and great music. After a busy day in the sun, it’s the perfect spot to down a bevo and let loose, with live local bands that have made waves at festivals such as Splendour in the Grass and Bluesfest.

5. It’s a festival with an impact

Remember that when you’re out on your board, it’s just you and mother nature. So this event is all about respecting the sand and the waves. Surfers know that if they work with mother nature, they can produce something magical that the crowds will enjoy. And in true surfing spirit, this festival will support Waves of Wellness to help depression through surfing.

6. It has the coolest and most mysterious competition prize

When you enter one of the comps in the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing, not only do you have the chance to be part of something epic but the chance to win big! We’re talking a mysterious surf holiday package supported by World Surfaris! In past years, winners have jet-setted to the Maldives and Papa New Guinea for two weeks of world-class surfing and you could be next.

Have you been to the Noosa Festival of Surfing? What was your favourite part?
