What to do after Groovin’ the Moo
Thumping bass and screaming guitars signal the return of another instalment of the Groovin’ The Moo music festival to Townsville. After you’ve had the chance to experience the amazing line-up of artists perform, take a moment to relax, unwind and explore this tropical city.
Here’s how you can spend your post-Groovin’ time dulling the sunburn ache and ringing ears.
Slip into island time
One of the big draw-cards for Townsville is tropical Magnetic Island, which is located just eight kilometres offshore. After a short ferry ride you’ll find yourself amongst palm trees looking over blue water stretching out in every direction. Yep, it’s that clichéd. And also that beautiful.
Depending on how adventurous you’re feeling after the festival you can get up close with koalas at Bungalow Bay Koala Village, try horse riding along Horseshoe Bay or jump on a guided jet ski tours to discover secluded private beaches and snorkel around the island. For great breakfast with views over the bay try either Barefoot art food wine or the Early Bird at Horseshoe Bay, sprinkled with sailboats bobbing lazily in the breeze.
If you’re keen to kick on but looking for a quieter place to enjoy a cold drink and escape the heat, check out The Brewery. Housed in the historic old GPO in the city centre, this craft beer bar offers a wide range of brewskies on tap brewed in massive vats in view of the bar. If the range is too overwhelming, grab a tasting rack to sample the full range of amber ale. We recommend the Townsville Bitter Premium with its light and fresh bouquet and full flavour. If you’d rather serve your own brews, try the local craft beer and ciders from the self pour bar at the TapHouse.
Relax in the parklands
As the sun starts to fade it’s time to set up a lazy late-afternoon picnic in the sculpted parklands or explore the walking trails, boardwalks and military history dotted throughout the natural gardens. The development of the Jezzine Military Barracks on the headland at The Strand has become a popular spot for a Sunday sesh.
Chase some more tunes
On dusk the cool air carries the sound of live music playfully across The Strand, signalling the evening session at Longboards Bar and Grill has started. Modelled on a rustic beach shack and overlooking the water, this place is known for its island views, live music and signature spicy buffalo wings smothered in Frank’s traditional spicy sauce. It’s the perfect place to unwind and enjoy some more tunes as the sun dips into the water.
Sweat it off
If you’re looking for a physical challenge to stretch out those legs after a day of dancing, take on Castle Hill. The views are epic any time of the day. Or stay on sea level and wander around the street art around Townsville or do a day trip to meet the reef.
