6 things to do during the summer school holidays on the Fraser Coast
Keep the little (and big) kids entertained these holidays with this downloadable list of activities.
1. Cool down
Enjoy the warmer weather at WetSide Water Education Park on the Esplanade at Hervey Bay. The free eco-friendly playground was designed around water ‘infotainment’, so as well as boasting an awesome waterpark with slides and a drop bucket, TotSide area for little ones under five and a FlipSide BoardRider wave machine (tickets are $6), everyone can get skilled up and learn about water and sustainable use.
2. Giddy up!
Take an equestrian escape to Susan River Homestead Adventure Resort where you can horse ride on a 1,600-acre property of pastures and bushland. Then, switch things up with water skiing, wakeboarding and tubing on the resort’s 17-acre lake.
3. No twerking, just twitching
Grab your binoculars, hat and camera and head off to see how many birds you can spot! See migratory birds coming from as far as Japan, Alaska and Siberia to Hervey Bay and the Great Sandy Strait. You’re bound to see more than a few with over 250 identified species in the region.
4. Island escape
Jump in the 4WD for a family adventure to World Heritage Listed Fraser Island. Catch one of the daily ferries from Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay to visit the famous Maheno shipwreck that met her stormy end during a cyclone in 1935.
5. Dolphin cruise
Cruise the coast of the Great Sandy Strait to spot pods of dolphins with Blue Dolphin Marine Tours. The tour takes four hours with morning tea provided and a chance to swim near one of the shallow sand banks.
6. Breaking Dusk
Bring a rug for free live entertainment at Sunday Riverside at Maryborough’s Brolga Theatre on the first Sunday of every month. You’ll find yummy food stalls and bar service, plus plenty of fun for the kids with lawn games and activities!
