6 things to do these summer school holidays in Outback Queensland
Summer in the outback means finding ways to cool off and creativity-plus. Here are some of the best things to do these school holidays.
1. Ride ‘em, cowboy
Don your favorite cowboy hat and grab your comfiest swag, it’s time for the Mt Isa New Year’s Eve Rodeo Party. Watch brave (crazy) people hop on (and fall off) angry bulls and broncos, camp for free and tuck into a bush BBQ that makes this event more Aussie than Paul Hogan.
2. Rev ‘n’ ride
Fill summer with the tranquil sounds of an off-road motorcycle race. The Bedourie Bikekhana race is going to shoot sand and dirt all over this quiet town. Start your engines then swing by the Outback Golf Course for a sand trap or two.
3. Desert oasis
Camp and canoe at Boodjamulla National Park where the water is full of birds and turtles and the trails are full of prehistoric creatures. Well, fossils but that’s still pretty cool. This oasis in the desert is like a museum and campsite all in one.
4. Bonus farm stay
Pack up the wagon and head out west for a farm stay with your soon-to-be extended family. Lyle and Madonna Connolly are the proud owners of Bonus Downs and have created a true outback experience where you and the kids can earn the daily workings of the farm or take walk through the bush. This place is the epitome of “no worries”. The only thing more abundant than cattle is the passion and hospitality of your hosts. Giddy up!
5. Alright stop, lava time
Go with the flow (the lava flow) and visit one of the oldest and best preserved lava tubes on the planet. The Undara Experience in Mount Surprise (best mountain name ever) offers a spotlighting tour that lets you witness thousands of micro-bats emerge from the caves. Mount Surprise, indeed.
6. Take to the skies
Amplify your kids’ excitement after they finish watching Planes (for the 567th time!) by taking them to Qantas Founders Museum in Longreach. They have enough aircraft and knowledge that you will never have to answer a question about airplanes again.
