6 things to do these summer school holidays in Tropical North Queensland

Tropical North Queensland has more things to see and do than you possibly have time for these school holidays so we picked some of the best ones for you.

1. Night watcher

Get ready to find out what goes bump in the night. Cairns Night Zoo lets you take a peek into the nocturnal world (of animals not people). They provide a BBQ, campfire folk songs and dance moves. You can even hand-feed a roo a late-night snack.

2. Hot to trot

Saddle up and ride out into croc country. Blazing Saddles guides you through their 18-acre billabong where you can see peacocks, geese, calfs and if you’re lucky (or unlucky) a croc or two. Yee haw! They’ve also got quad bikes if you want more horsepower (pardon the pun).

3. Bird is the word

Practice your best bird calls and head out to Birdworld Kuranda. This is the Jurassic Park of bird sanctuaries, but without the terror and running. There are over 60 species of birds and they land on you if you’re nice. So be nice.

4. High in the sky

Start your day with a breakfast of awesome views. Hot Air Ballooning Cairns is a early-bird-gets-the-worm kind of place. Start your day in Mareeba to see the Atherton Tablelands from high in the sky. Then their shuttle takes you straight to the ocean to get out to the reef. It’s so worth the early wake-up call.

5. Surfs up, dude!

Hang ten while hanging 20 metres above the jungle floor. Jungle Surfing Canopy Tours take you through the jungle from a dinosaurs point of view. You’re harnessed in and it’s hands-free so snap some pictures.

6. Kids vs Wild

Get your hunter gatherer skills up to pro levels. The Kuku Yalanji Aboriginal people put Bear Grylls to shame. Walkabout Cultural Adventures takes you out into the Kuku Yalanji’s backyard for a frolic and to learn the skills that make them the masters of bush and beach.
