This is the time of year when free time comes in spades but don’t let it slip by. Make the most of it with this list of summer holiday activities.

1. Crocs and creatures

Slide, slither and crawl your way to the Museum of Tropical Queensland for Croc Country running all of January. Ranger Dan’s dangerous snake pit show will set your “eeeeeeeeek” meter to 1000 and you’ll also meet SuperCroc! He’s 110 million years old, 11 metres long and ate dinosaurs for breakfast. Like a boss.

2. Red hot rodeo

Yee Haw! Grab your little ‘uns and head out to Charters Towers on December 31 for a bull-bucking, hat-flapping good time with the PBR Touring Pro Series. With over 40 different riders it’s going to be a rootin’ tootin’ good time.

3. Cricket carnival

Hit the holidays for six when the Goldfield Ashes comes to Charters Towers. This is the largest cricket carnival in the Southern Hemisphere. Whether you’re having a hit or just watching, head out west for a weekend of blue Aussie cricket from January 24-26.

4. Pretty as a princess

Grab your Mickey Mouse ears and start practicing your singing because Disney Live is coming to the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre. It’s a princess fest with all the best ones: Cinderella, Belle from Beauty and the Beast and Snow White. Even Grumpy is coming. The shows run all day from January 24-25.

5. Away in a manger

Oh come ye, oh come ye, to Townsville from December 18-22 for Stable on the Strand. Jesus is in the spotlight with actors stepping up and playing the three wise men, Mary, Joseph and all the other biblical big hitters. Kids can pet camels, sheep, goats and of course a donkey. That’ll do Townsville, that’ll do.

6. Fairy godmother’s gift

Wash the dishes, scrub the floor and then jump in your pumpkin carriage and get to Charter Towers on December 13-14. The Cinderella – Panto is on and all the cool kids are going. So tell your wicked stepmother to buy you some tickets and don’t forget your glass slippers.
