12 Queensland events you shouldn’t miss in 2017
Imagine suppressing your jealousy and having to ‘like’ a selfie that your friend took at a cool event you missed – uhh, awful thought.
Well, do like Taylor and shake it off because 2017 will be your year my friend, and you’ll be the one waving around a selfie stick at the coolest events in Queensland.
To make your search even easier, here’s the top 12 events that should make your must-do list.
BRISBANE GLOBAL RUGBY TENS | BRISBANE
When: 11-12 February 2017
Love your rugby? Head to Brisbane to watch Australia’s Super Rugby quintet – the Force, Waratahs, Reds, Rebels and Brumbies take on the world’s strongest teams over two days of rugby heaven. The tournament intensifies the traditional virtues of rugby union with 10 players per side, playing 10 minute halves. And with less time on the field, teams will unleash their best plays early in the game, so you can expect an electrifying performance from kick off.
This global showdown will transform Suncorp Stadium into an exhilarating battlefield as 14 professional teams from France, South Africa, Samoa, Japan and New Zealand, descend on Brisbane (with an army of fans) for 28 matches of unapologetic rugby union.
MOOLOOLABA TRIATHLON FESTIVAL | SUNSHINE COAST
When: 10-12 MARCH 2017
Challenge yourself and tick off your first triathlon at the 25th anniversary of the Mooloolaba Triathlon Festival. Seasoned and novice athletes can participate in a range of courses including the much-loved Olympic distance tri which includes a 1km ocean swim along one of the Sunshine Coasts’ best stretches of beach. Other events include the Superkidz Triathlon and the Twilight 5km run.
And if you’re not about the tri-life, you can join the action and cheer the athletes on as they make their way through the course.
QUIKSILVER PRO & ROXY PRO GOLD COAST | GOLD COAST

The Gold Coast has produced more surfing world champions than any other place else in the world, so it’s the perfect stage for the Quiksilver Pro and Roxy Pro to open the men’s and women’s world championships tours.
Snapper Rocks will transform into the ultimate surf hub when it attracts thousands of fans in March. Together they’ll witness and support their favourite surf-pros as they dominate giant waves and ride flawless right-hand barrels. You can get involved with the action and watch the best of the best surf it out for the championships.
WORLD SCIENCE FESTIVAL BRISBANE | BRISBANE

With over 120,000 visitors during its first appearance outside of New York, the World Science Festival Brisbane is returning for a second year and this time you can expect to see more mind-boggling discoveries and experiments. Your little ones will enjoy participating in the hands on activities included in the Street Science program and you’ll be intrigued by the provocative ‘Conversations’ series, featuring some of science’s best minds debating cutting-edge discoveries.
The five-day festival literally takes science out of the laboratory and spills it out into the streets of Brisbane with action-packed fun and learning experiences. Think: drones, driverless cars, exploring black hole concepts and celebrating all things science.
CMC ROCKS QLD | IPSWICH

For the love of country music, don’t miss this chance to sing your heart out with a crowd of country-music-loving fans at the 10th anniversary of the CMC Rocks QLD. Headlining the southern hemisphere’s biggest international country and roots festival are the Dixie Chicks, Kip Moore and Little Big Town.
Last year, this event made Australian history by being the first ever country music festival to sell out!

They say that you are guaranteed to set your personal best at the Gold Coast Airport Marathon because it’s the flattest and fastest course in Australia. And, for finishing you’re rewarded with a medal, t-shirt and certificate to commemorate your achievement!
The course is the most picturesque and the scenery will make any non-runner want to lace up their shoes and get involved. Serious athletes are able to compete in the 10km run or the 5.7km challenge and junior runners can compete in the 4km or 2km dashes.
If you’re not interested in participating, why not provide spectator support a.k.a “runspiration” to runners by cheering from the sideline (or the beach)?

It’s time to switch gears because the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships are heading to Tropical North Queensland. Mountain biking enthusiasts can catch 300 of the world’s best downhill and cross country riders compete for the world title on a rigid course that speeds through Cairns’ world-heritage listed rainforest.
Rumour has it that the brand new course being developed is the most daring and gnarly the world has ever seen!
RUGBY LEAGUE WORLD CUP | CAIRNS, TOWNSVILLE & BRISBANE
WHEN: OCTOBER – DECEMBER 2017
No one does Rugby League better than Queenslanders! So get your jerseys, war paint and foam hands ready because the world’s best Teams are coming to Queensland to compete for the Rugby League World Cup!
Eight premier matches will be hosted in Queensland with Townsville and Cairns each hosting three pool matches, including a thrilling double header. And, the Aussie spirit will be alive and loud in Brisbane when it becomes home to one semi-final and one finals bout.
