Winter in Queensland isn’t just about snuggling indoors, binge watching TV and finally getting to wear that scarf from the back of the closet. There are a ton of exciting events happening around the state that will make you forget it actually dipped below 20c.

From an event that combines jumpers, yarnbombing and jazz to a festival that features bands preforming in the iconic Aussie Outback, there will be more than enough going on to keep you busy until the temps start to rise again in spring!

Mary Poppins Festival

Fans of Mary Poppins should grab their umbrellas and head to Maryborough to celebrate the famous, fictional nanny. Mary Poppins‘ author, P.L. Travers, was born in Maryborough in 1899 so in homage to her heart-warming tale, the annual event includes nanny races, chimney sweep challenges, sidewalk art and street theatre. More Info

Gold Coast Marathon

Pitted as Australia’s premier road race, and the first marathon in the country to hold an IAAF Road Race Gold Label, it’s hard to beat this course based on pure scenery alone. They say if you want to post your personal best, the flat, fast course which hugs the Gold Coast’s beaches and Broadwater, is the place to do it. More Info

Big Red Bash

Sure, Paris may have the Eiffel Tower, but Birdsville has Big Red. Smack bang in the middle of the Simpson Desert in Queensland’s Outback, the Big Red sand dune is home to this annual camping and concert gig. Castrol Edge Townsville 400

If you like your tropical Townsville holiday infused with some extra revs, then the Supercars Townsville 400 is the event for you. This is three days in which you will rock and race, while you watch the powerful V8s roar their way through Reid Park on specially constructed roads which form 70 per cent of the circuit.

VIVA Surfers Paradise

In this quirky festival in Warwick, you’ll find they have a way with wool turning it into creative art forms around the city.  There’s tons of jazz, art workshops, artist talks and the opportunity for visitors to knit their own tree creation at this fun festival. Ipswich Super Spring

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines and feel the super power of the V8s! Held at the aptly-named Champions Way at Willowbank west of Brisbane, the Queensland Raceway is dubbed the ‘Paperclip’ due to its six-turn design and lack of elevation. Festival of Chamber Music

Townsville sets the stage for this terrific 10-day festival in which musicians appear in more than 25 concerts in this tropical north Queensland destination. Regarded as one of Queensland’s most iconic events, the Royal Queensland Show, or “Ekka” as it is colloquially known runs for ten days each August when the bush comes to Brisbane. There’s music, agriculture, arts, fashion, bars, wood chopping, sideshow alley and of course, the show’s famous strawberry ice-creams. Some reckon you haven’t lived until you’ve been to the Ekka.

Broadbeach Jazz Festival

Jazz up your life to the rhythm and the beat of the Broadbeach Jazz Festival. Gympie Music Muster

You don’t even have to be a fan of country music to enjoy the Gympie Music Muster as there’s something for everyone here. Perched on Amamoor Creek State Forest Park, this is one of Australia’s largest outdoor music festivals. The festival showcases everything from folk, bluegrass, balladeers, the gospel, blues and bush poetry.
