Gold Coast Marathon: High fives and beautiful beaches
It’s not hard to see why runners from across the globe love the Gold Coast Marathon. From Japan to Kenya and everywhere in between, people flock to Surfers Paradise each year to run the 42-kilometre race in truly beautiful surrounds. The sun, surf and sand are just the start of the experience, which sees crowds line the course from Main Beach to Southport.
The end of the race offers every competitor the chance to kick back and enjoy their surroundings at a much slower pace, whether that’s with a cheeky post-run swim or a well-deserved breakfast of champions.
Training may have already started for the 2016 race weekend on July 2 – 3, but here are our favourite moments from the 2015 Gold Coast Airport Marathon:
Lucky half-marathon runners watching the sunrise over the Gold Coast.
Up early with the rising sun to cheer on the runners.
More than 25,000 participants at the starting line.
Cheering on runners from the sidelines.
Hard to resist a mid-race snap with views like this!
Kenneth Mungara winning the 2015 Gold Coast Marathon in a record 2.08 hours. The Kenyan hairdresser ran the fastest time for any marathon in Australia!
The reward for running the Gold Coast Marathon – all 42 kilometres!
Post-race celebrations by the beach.
