6 things to do these summer school holidays in Brisbane
Art, science, theatre, festive fireworks and museums… there’s a bit of something for everyone in Brisbane these holidays.
1. En pointe
Once upon a dream, see Princess Aurora be woken by true love’s kiss at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre in a classic fairy tale ballet theatre performance. Runs 14-17 January 2015.
2. Mad scientist
Be part of the Sciencentre’s holiday science theatre shows where you’ll get to take part in experiments and demonstrations. Curiosity didn’t kill the cat! The shows run from 13 December to 26 January 2015.
3. Sticker graffiti
Get cultured at the Gallery of Modern Art. Everyone’s going to love Yayoi Kusama’s obliteration room. Armed with colourful dot stickers, you’ll get to plaster them all over white furniture, surfaces and walls. There’s a heap of other interactive exhibitions, drawing activities and games for kids. The best part? It’s free.
4. Adventure club
Head down to Riverlife Adventure Centre and test yourself on the Segway Obstacle Course while dodging cones and jumping speed bumps. Then rock climb up 20-metre cliffs to take in Brisbane’s best views of the city and river. Participants must be at least 8 years old for both activities.
5. Crazy night sky
Head to South Bank to enjoy a festive fireworks display as it ignites Brisbane’s night sky from 17 December at 8:15pm. Don’t worry if you can’t make it the first night, the big bang will continue nightly until 21 December, excluding Thursday. The Wheel of Brisbane also has a special gift for families attending the fireworks – kids under 12 ride free with a full-fare paying adult!
6. Jurassic City
Rawr! Discover the state’s long-lost inhabitants – dinosaurs, giant reptiles and megafauna – at the Lost Creatures exhibit at Queensland Museum. Check out the 3D models, dinosaur footprints, bones, fossils and a kids scavenger hunt. The free exhibition runs until 31 December 2014.
