Get out and start exploring these September school holidays with our top 6 activities to keep the kids entertained.

1. WaterWorld

Feeling the heat? Get wet and wild in Sarina when WaterWorld Central returns for the holidays from 20 September to 6 October, 2014. This super cool portable water theme park pops up out of nowhere with giant pools, slides, zorb balls and pools. Slide down the giant twin slides of the Dragon Pool, slip through the shark’s mouth into the Shark Pool or just chill out in the Crocodile Pool. Cost: $20 (online price).

2. Instameets

Got a smartphone? Got an Instagram account? Great. Let the iPhoneography begin! On Saturday 4 October, Queensland is holding the biggest Instameet. Ever. That means people like you, all around the state, are going to meet up in groups to snap away and upload their pics to Instagram in the biggest show-and-tell about their hometown or holiday spot. Find out where you can get in on the action here. Confused? Get the lowdown on Instameets here.

3. Forest flyer

Write your own Jungle Book in the ancient rainforest of Finch Hatton Gorge, suspended 25 metres above the ground. At Forest Flying you’ll go on a bushwalk first up, then get strapped in for adventure. You control how fast you glide along the cables, but remember to take in the scenery and see if you can spot any fruit bats or eagles along the way! Each tour takes around two hours and riders need to be a minimum of 18kg. Cost: $60 per person.

4. Sweet dreams

Got a sweet tooth? Visit the Sarina Sugar Shed and see their mini sugar distillery to learn how sugar goes from the canefields to you. See how the sugar is grown, processed, milled and distilled (then try not to get too hyped up in the fairy floss section afterwards). You’ll even get to taste test the freshly extracted cane juice. Open Monday to Saturday. Adults $22. Children $12. Family pass $49.

5. Circus Oz

The 100% human circus is coming to town! Circus Oz is rolling into Mackay on 27-28 September with a big-top show inspired by the pre-digital world (woah, what was that even like?!). Witness crazy stunt-jumping, jugglers, acrobats and trapeze with comedy, live music and cabaret thrown in for good measure. Adults $25. Children $25. Family pass $90.

6. Wild walk

Get ready to travel around the botanical world at the Mackay Regional Botanical Gardens on Tuesday 23, Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 September, 2014. You’ll be given a Nature Play passport and will join Maya and friends for a walk to the Brigalow Belt and Regional Forest sections of the Botanical Gardens to complete special missions, like ‘bush sculpture’ or ‘garden sounds’. Interested in getting your green on? Book by Friday 19 September. Each group is limited to 10 children (5 years and older).  Cost: $5 each.
