Birdsville: Population 100 (give or take).

It’s remote, dusty and lies on the edge of the epic red sand dunes of the Simpson Desert. Originally a toll point for drovers transporting cattle from Queensland to South Australia, now this iconic town is more well-known for its annual races and Dusty’s curry camel pies.

Kelly Theobald is a Birdsville-based journalist, photographer and author who has thrown herself into outback Queensland’s lifestyle with gusto. We handed over the reins of our Instagram account recently and let her camera do the talking.

What gorgeous photos! I always thought Birdsville was a tiny town in the middle of nowhere. It looks beautiful though. Now I want to go there!
