[Update 16 May: Scroll to the bottom of this article to view the final shortlist.]

Yes, you read right. As our ex-island caretaker is regretfully handing over the keys to his island hacienda we’re looking for someone to take his place.

As our Park Ranger you will be exploring the world’s oldest rainforest, watching whales migrate on the Great Barrier Reef, and showcase our five World Heritage areas to the world through blogs and social media.

This is the perfect opportunity for an outdoor lover with a sense of adventure to promote some of the world’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders to an international audience. The position is a six-month contract attracting a generous salary package of AU$100,000 and a free jar of vegemite.

Your responsibilities

  • Patrol the beaches – You have 7,400 kilometres of palm and beach-fringed coastline within your jurisdiction, but you only need to show us your favourites.
  • Swim, dive and snorkel the world’s biggest aquarium. With 600 islands and 1,500 species of fish to hang out with, we’re sure the 30C water will keep you occupied.
  • Feed the fish, and meet and greet with local wildlife, including kangaroos, crocodiles and the short-tempered cassowary.
  • Get up close and personal with hatching turtles and migrating whales and share your experience with the world.
  • Showcase the best of our 300 national and marine parks and state forests. Like a well-paid Tarzan.
  • Report on your adventures through photo blogs, social media channels and media interviews.

Who we’re looking for

We will consider applicants from a wide range of backgrounds, but believe you should possess these traits:

  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills
  • Be adventurous by nature and willing to try new things
  • Have a passion for the outdoors and nature
  • Good swimming skills and enthusiasm for snorkelling and/or diving

About the job package

The position of Park Ranger attracts a AUD$100,000 salary package (AUD $50,000 salary and AUD $50,000 to cover living expenses) for the six-month contract.

The successful candidate will live amongst the stars with a range of rent-free accommodation. You might spend one night camping on an island and the next in a bunk on a luxury yacht.

You’ll receive return airfares from your nearest capital city (in your home country), travel insurance and the cameras and gadgets required to show the world a good time.
The six-month contract commences on 1st August 2013.

About your new office

Queensland is regarded as having one of the world’s richest natural environments and boasts a rich and diverse array of World Heritage areas including the Great Barrier Reef, Daintree Rainforest and Fraser Island.

The state is home to hundreds of national parks, conservation areas, resource reserves and state forests.

How to apply

The position is open to adventure-hungry, outdoor lovers from Australia and overseas. Apply online at http://bestjo.bs/Park_Ranger.

Since 1988 I have self funded my overland travels into the Australian outback visiting many unforgettable town’s, rocks and bristling mining centre’s.Seeing our quartz X marks the spot that have became a major mining boom towns.I saw 4wd towns that only trusted Landcruiser’s and the few Land Rovers become modern with sealed roads that led to car parks and swimming pools.I have hung out with Elder Aborigonals in Warburton or along the way on the Gunbarrel Highway or Central road.Been way off track measuring Gravity with Exploration companies.I have friends in every town, back country lane to remote camp and love driving through deserts of usually an explosion of wildflowers, inland sea or the odd cyclone making a fierce companion.Sometimes bogging my quad bike with 4km only between myself and a mate with the next manned camp an extra 45km away. We’ve had to abandon quad bikes and trailers because of the wet in the knowledge they would be there next year.Such is the honesty you usually find plus who gets to go to half the place i have been to.tho.There is more in the Outback than meets the eye.Sharing half i know off might take a while. . .

do I need to record and upload 2 videos (one for each position), or just one?
Thanks!!! and good luck to everyone :)

    Hi from Sweden,

Still waiting for My Go PRO Black Edition. Before it arrives I thought I’d better keep you interested by describing my unique skills and and abilities. I’m a 54-year old school supervisor. My experience includes dealing with extremely difficult personalities which would make a real life encounter with a crocodile, a shark or a poisonous snake nothing but a piece of cake. I’m also a skilled swimmer whose records consists of 5 Swedish Citizen medals and 25 metres under water swimmming in the Valhalla public Swimming pool in Gothenburg, Sweden. My diving and snorkeling skills have been challenged and proven in exotic sites such as Thailand, the Mediterrainian and the Great Barrier Reef. I can also guarantee that I’m extremely fit. The last 25 years I’ve carried a weight belt of 25 kg around my waist to make sure my fitness will not detoriate with maturing age. I’m also a worldfamous blogger with at least 5 Facebook friends. Living and travelling in the outbacks have also been a natural and fulfilling part of my life for many years. Long before my 10th birthday i regularly fed the elks in Slottskogen Wildlife Sanctuary 1500 kms south of the Polar circle. In 1987 I was one of very few daring aspirants to feed the baby lions in Borås Zoo in the same area. I can also guarantee that my wife approve of this application

  • MacMagnus

    Hi,

MacMagnus from Sweden again. Thank you for your quick, personal and very positive response. Yes, you can use the same mobile phone number when you call me again. And I will of course not tell the other applicants. My lips are sealed. You asked me to give you some more detailed information about my snorkelling and diving skills. I think my video will give you a more accurate picture but I’ve developed a rather unique technique. A combination of very irregular swimming strokes and puffing out of small amounts of blood through my nostrils has created an almost unbeatable method to attract the local marine neighbourhood. In my first message I also failed to mention that scientific research has proven that my combination of chromosomes has created a perfect genetic puzzle for the kind of tasks involved in your job.

    Best wishes,

    MacMagnus

Hello! I recently uploaded my video via Facebook to the Australian Working Holiday. The web page told me it was going to send me a confirmation email to my email account but I haven’t received anything… Is there any way I can know if my video was successfully uploaded? Thanks!!

    • Natalie Costaras

Me neither!…… Not sure who to contact either…. Anyone got any contact details?

    • http://twitter.com/emanyueru Emanuel Wetterqvist

Hi Alejandro, please email bestjobs@tourism.australia.com to confirm that your application has gone through. All the best!

Hello! I uploaded my video a few days ago via Facebook and an instant message said that they were going to send me a confirmation email to my email account, but I haven’t received anything…how do I know if my application has been done successfully?

  • Katie

Do you have to upload a different video for each job or can it be the same one if it addresses all the appropriate things for that position?

  • Natalie Costaras

    Hi Emanuel,
Sorry to pester you with a boring question… but you seem to be the guru for this Best Job in the World competition!

Apparently we should receive an email to confirm whether the video uploaded successfully or not, but I haven’t received anything yet…. There’s no option to try uploading the video again as my account says ‘Application Complete’ – do you know of anyone I can contact to double check it’s gone through ok?
    Thanks!

    • http://twitter.com/emanyueru Emanuel Wetterqvist

Hi Natalie, see my response above. Cheers!
