Will Fifty Shades of Grey lead to a ‘babymoon’ boom?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Forget oysters and champagne – it seems bondage is the aphrodisiac of 2012!

Following record-breaking sales of the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy, island resorts, B’n’B’s and hinterland cottages across Queensland are anticipating an influx of expectant parents wanting to take a ‘babymoon’ holiday before their bundle of joy arrives.

Back in the day, baby booms might have been credited to a blackout or a particularly celebratory New Year’s Eve, but with millions of sales worldwide it seems erotic fiction is now spicing up bedroom antics.

As a result Professor Ellis Cashmore, expert in culture at the UK’s Staffordshire University, has predicted an increase in the number of newborns early next year.

He told the Daily Mail that in previous years there had been a spike in pregnancies during football World Cups but now, thanks to Fifty Shades of Grey, women were being inspired to get into the bedroom more often.

With the baby boom set to begin, we’ve listed some of the best Queensland babymoon holidays mums and dads-to-be can indulge in before bub arrives.

Freestyle Escape, Sunshine Coast

Choose from either the Arthouse or the Escape House overlooking the rolling hills of the Sunshine Coast hinterland and simply relax, or take part in one of their cooking classes in the Outdoor Kitchen, or an art class.

qualia, The Whitsundays

Go on an uber luxe island babymoon by escaping to Hamilton Island’s six-star boutique resort, qualia. Indulge in pamper treatments at spa qualia or enjoy some of the culinary classes and tastings on offer at the resort.

Witches Falls Cottages, Gold Coast

Tucked away in the beautiful and tranquil Gold Coast hinterland, parents-to-be can put their feet up and relax at Witches Falls Cottages with a specialised babymoon package that includes daily gourmet or BBQ breakfast, a pamper session and cuddly companion for your baby from the Teddy Bear Shop.

Spicers Balfour Hotel, Brisbane

A luxury hotel set in the inner-city fashionable suburb of New Farm, Spicers Balfour Hotel offers expecting couples a city getaway with a touch of extravagance. Choose from the variety on experiences on offer such as high tea, Pregnancy Yoga or Art Balfour – Brisbane’s newest art space.

Heron Island, Southern Great Barrier Reef

Before your bundle of joy arrives, see other babies being born when the green and loggerhead turtles hatch on Heron Island. The island is a significant nesting and hatching location for the two vulnerable turtle species.
