Pub of the Week: Button up for a fancy tipple at The London Club
There’s a new breed of ‘pretty pubs’ emerging in Brisbane and Kim Barnard from The Urban List is digging the glamorous vibe.
It’s a Saturday afternoon when I first drop in, and as streams of beautiful people walk (or, more often, jog) glamorously by, I’m playing chess and drinking champagne in a room that makes me feel as though I’ve wandered into a gentlemen’s club in the ‘40s. In actual fact, I have no idea how to play chess, so I’m basically pushing pieces around the board distractedly while I check out my surroundings. And, boy, is there a lot to gawk at.
With a distinctly European (some may call it Euro Chic, but I will not) vibe, and a decidedly glamorous feel, The London Club is impressive. Dark timber and leather abound, books line the walls, and eclectic knickknacks are carefully displayed throughout.
If the drapes, chandeliers, dim lighting, and fancy wallpaper aren’t doing it for you, however, the bar offerings sure will. The drinks menu is packed with pages and pages of beverages to get you in the mood; impressive wines, imported spirits, over 40 beers and ciders, and more cocktails than you could possibly consume (note: this is not a challenge). Sink into one of the lounges and order some tapas, or move to a table for a more formal meal. There’s also a beautiful alfresco area at the entrance, so sitting outside is a popular choice.
Though I’m sure the purists will scoff, this buttoned-up pub has something for everyone. Opulent, cosy, and just a little bit fancy, The London Club is bringing sexy back to pubs in a big way.
Leave your thongs at home.
